i feel that this is an important post to make as i have seen a lot of people complaining about things such as racism and sexism in their games, including riot devs.
in the specific instance of riot greenily (as an example) i agree that the player should have a punishment issued and his behavior was out of line. having said that, implementing some sort of automatic method for detecting this sort of thing could lead to an easily abused report system just like in league of legends; perhaps even more so as this game uses voice comms and not text.
i think a reasonable way of handling this issue is to issue an automatic mute to any player who receives a large number of CONFIRMED reports. meaning that the player starts every game automatically muted by the rest of their team, and that team would have to un-mute them manually if they choose to hear them. this is an easy way of showing that a person is likely toxic over chat/voice comms. players that dont want to deal with it can choose to leave them muted, and players that would like to hear callouts and have thicker skin can unmute them to see if they are being constructive or just trolling.
i would like to put a quick story here to demonstrate why i believe that this is something that should be handled very carefully and not used to punish anything outside of very personal insults such as racism or sexism that obviously go over the top.
when i was first learning higher level csgo gameplay in esea i was placed into a game with moe and freakazoid. i was playing long A with moe and as many people familiar with csgo will know, he is often EXTREMELY toxic to players that he perceives as having made a mistake. that being said i was very excited to learn anything i could from either of them. i knew that moe wasnt at the highest level of professional play, but he was certainly better than me and could no doubt offer insight into my gameplay, even if it was in the form of rage fueled toxicity.
i immediately ran long A and didnt cross because i was somewhat blinded (they threw flashes in a way that was difficult to completely dodge due to layering the timings and distances), both moe and i died when the enemy team rushed us. moe started yelling at me to, "JUST GO ACROSS IF YOU ARE BLIND, IF YOU HAVE A COMPETENT AWPER BEHIND YOU ITS THEIR JOB TO KEEP YOU SAFE OR MAKE THE ENEMY TEAM PAY FOR KILLING YOU. IF YOU DONT GO ACROSS THEN THE AWPER HAS TO PEEK INTO AN ENEMY TEAM THAT ISNT DISTRACTED AND YOU WILL BOTH DIE ANYWAY".
having heard this advice delivered in typical moe fashion (toxic and loud, i left out the expletives), i followed it.
the next round i ran out after trying to dodge the flashes as usual, the enemy team threw them so that i couldnt completely dodge again and i was still somewhat blind just like in the round before. moe peeked out and killed one, then i had my vision back and i killed 2 with a spray transfer. moe peeked again for a second kill and i swung wide for my 3rd. the 2 of us easily killed the entire enemy team and they didn't come long again for the rest of the game.
ever since this advice i have played long very differently and i can guarantee that it had a positive influence on my gameplay. HOWEVER, the manner in which moe delivered his advice was extremely insulting, very toxic, definitely out of line and certainly bannable had it been in league of legends.
just throwing this in here. many months later i ran into both moe and freak many more times. i had polished my gameplay and performed far better. both of them complimented me on separate occasions and had nothing toxic to say. this goes to show that when toxicity is related to gameplay, it should be taken as a learning experience or something that can easily be ignored, irregardless of gender or race, as the toxic outburst had nothing to do with either. while it can be unpleasant it shouldnt be punishable as it shows that somebody is passionate about the game. the mute button is there for a reason.
